Schools from all over the world are eligible to implement the activity as long as they communicate and cooperate with the organizers. The final events can take place as:
This year, for the first time, students of primary education (age 9-12) will participate in the contesting events as well. Thus the participations are categorized in:
The same categorization is applied for the video participations as well.
The activity starts with the application of the interested school submitted by its educators. Responsible for the activity must be at least one educator though even more should be encouraged to help, especially from fields like Physics, Biology, Philology, Arts, Computer science etc. The educators can include their educational activities at relevant sessions of their teaching program as project work, or maybe at educational groups that are operating in the school framework (eg theatrical team or music team...) or maybe even lead independed teams. You can find here samples of the activity for leading the educators and students.
There is no restriction as to how many students can participate from every school.
After the expression of interest the educators are encouraged to discuss with the students upon deciding the theme of their performance which can be relevant to everything that has to do with science.
After this, educators and students are called to decide upon the actions they will include in their activity and then elaborate the roles and responsibilities. Every school can take up and implement some (if not all) of the following actions (always according to the students’ abilities):
It is recommended that the students will divide in working groups referring to the activities they want to be involved in (always according to the students’ abilities):
The students, according to their interests, can participate in more than one team. At the end of the activity, every team in collaboration with the responsible educators will be called to submit a document outlining the contributors of the performance (you can find a sample here), as well as a report describing all the promoting actions the team implemented (you can find a sample here). Also, the educators during two stages of the activity will be called to fill in the observation form. This is about the capturing – writing down their experience since the first moment of the activity, describing how the scientific concepts were represented and dramatized, what theatrical techniques were used, examples that highlighted the creativity (imagination, innovation, originality) and the improvisation as well as embodied moves that were used for the representation of the scientific thematic chosen. Such a documentation is especially important for the scientific/pedagogical assessment of the whole process.
During the activity, the organizing team and special collaborators (scientists as well as directors/musicians/dancers) will observe the process and provide valuable support to the participants in the form of:
The support is about the pedagogical part of the activity and the script that will be developed as well as the directing/artistic part and will go on up to 2 weeks before the final event.
When the educators finalize the days and hours in wich they will engage with the students for the activity, the organizing team must be informed so that the school visits and the online meetingscan be programmed for every school.
The events: Preparation
In the school year 2017-2018, for the optimal running of the activity final events should be realized in April 2018
1 month before the final event it will be asked by every participating school to declare their equipment (eg. Video projection, musical instruments, microphones etc) that they will use for performing their play as well as the sceneries they will use (what kind of, how many). Also the specifications of each venue (size of stage, visual and sound equipment etc) will be announced here.
Important clarification: In case of a school using audiovisual material from the internet, the use license should be checked.
Rehearsals: For the schools that want to rehearse there is the option of having rehearsals at the venue of the final event.
The dates and places for the rehearsals are:
Athens, between 16–20 April 2018
Thessaloniki, between 23–27 April 2018
During May and after contacting all responsible educators, the program of the events as well as the rehearsals will be announced. In order for these to be finalized, 2 months before the final events the schools will be informed about the hours of running them (eg Saturday 11.00-17.00, Sunday 12.00-16.00) and asked to register if any difficulties occur in their participation at the time and day of their performance so that arrangements will be made. The final program will be concluded after reviewing the above.
From there on, no further changes will be made.
Finally, it should be noted that because of the final events being recorded, a special form of consent will be sent prior to the event realization to all participating schools and must be signed by the parents of the participating students.
The events: realizing
The duration of the events is 2 days each. The exact time will be set according to the number of the participating schools as well as the duration of the plays. The performances will be open to the public to watch. Students and educators must arrive to the venue at the time indicated to them by the organizers. Every school can watch all the performances of the events, both days. Also, the video performances of the schools that participated in the video contest will be viewed.
Participation with video
The participation with video is a special category of the activity. The schools that will choose to participate in that way will have to record their performance and submit it to the organizing team until Friday 9 March 2018. After this, the videos will be uploaded to the dedicated online space, reachable by the schools participating in the specific category, so that they will be evaluated.
The results of the video performances will be announced online before the realization of the first final event. Also every time at the closing ceremony of the final events the awards of the video contest will be announced so that representatives of the awarded schools will have the chance to receive their award live if they desire so. The ones that cannot be present during the live awards will receive theirs in electronic form.
The videos will also be viewed at both final events (out of contest). The schools participating in the video contest will be supported in the same way as previously described for the events (meetings, workshops etc).
